 CCAS Program, April 3, 2008
at Pediatric Anesthesiology 2008
By Chandra Ramamoorthy. M.B., B.S. and Dean Andropoulos, M.D.
The second CCAS Program, in conjunction with the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia’s Winter/Spring Meeting, was held on April 3, and had an impressive 207 attendees. The program was organized by Jim DiNardo and the Education Committee, and featured an outstanding program of nationally recognized experts presenting state of the art information about important developments in our field, as well as ample opportunity for audience interaction. An audience response system was used; with thought provoking questions submitted by the speakers and moderators the basis for revealing information about practices and opinions in our field. The first morning session, Cardiac Anesthesia Update, was moderated by Dr. Steve Tosone from Atlanta, and featured an outstanding presentation on the hybrid procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome by Dr. Mark Galantowicz, from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, who has championed this procedure and had fascinating insight into the development of this approach at their hospital. Then, Dr. Ravi Thiagarajan from Boston Children’s Hospital gave an excellent update on mechanical circulatory support for post-cardiotomy failure.
The second morning session was moderated by Dr. Emad Mossad, and featured Drs. Christopher Tirotta, Glyn Williams, David Vener, and Jim DiNardo giving their approached to inotropic support, glucose control, and use of serum lactate values. The audience response system contributed to the lively interchange about these controversial topics.
The final morning session was moderated by Dr. David Rosen, and concerned the Fontan patient. Dr. Scott Walker from Indianapolis gave an excellent presentation about the failing Fontan patient and pathophysiology, and the Dr. Suanne Daves from Chicago, and Dr. Karen Thompson from Washington D.C. spoke about the systematic approach to preoperative evaluation of the Fontan patient.
The first session after lunch was moderated by Dr. Vic Baum and featured a “How I Manage It” panel of Dr. Andropoulos, James Spaeth from Cincinnati, Gail Boltz from Stanford speaking about their approaches to brain MRI for single ventricle infants, a Trisomy 21 infant after complete atrioventricular canal repair for bronchoscopy, uncontrolled postoperative bleeding in a Stage I Norwood palliation patient, and myocardial biopsy in a post transplant patient with severe coronary artery vasculopathy. Once again the discussion with the audience was vigorous, and facilitated by the audience response system.
The final afternoon sessions featured concurrent workshops, on mechanical ventilation by Dr. Steve Stayer from Houston, and Transesophageal echocardiography by Dr. Wanda Miller-Hance also from Houston. These were outstanding, well attended workshops generating much interest and many questions from the audience.
The audience evaluations were very positive, and also contained a number of suggestions for topics and speakers that will be incorporated into future meetings. The attendance and response were so positive that the SPA Education Committee and Board has asked the CCAS to provide a similar one day conference at the Winter SPA/AAP meetings in both 2009 and 2010. We welcome suggestions for speakers and topics for those meetings.
