00CCAS Program, April 3, 2008

Jim DiNardo, M.D.,
Children’s Hospital, Boston

We are very enthusiastic about the upcoming CCAS Program at the Spring SPA Meeting in San Diego. The Program has been structured to be a worthwhile educational opportunity for the entire SPA membership. A full day is devoted to a Program that contains a mix of didactic sessions, panels, and hands-on workshops. The Audience Response System will be available and it is anticipated that this will contribute to constructive debate and discussion on topics of current interest such as aprotinin use, normothermic CPB, and glucose management.

Emile Bacha, an innovative surgeon and Hybrid Procedure pioneer will provide unique insight on use of the Hybrid Procedure in treatment of HLHS. Ravi Thiagarajan, a pediatric cardiac intensivist and recognized authority in the use of ECMO and VAD will provide an update on the use of mechanical circulatory for post-cardiotomy failure.  The TEE and Mechanical Ventilation Workshops organized by Wanda Miller-Hance, and Steve Stayer, are structured so that participants will be able to attend both sessions. The Fontan Patient session will include an in-depth presentation on the failing Fontan circulation by Scott Walker coupled with a PBLD type discussion of evaluation of the Fontan patient by Suanne Daves and Karen Thompson.

The “In My Opinion” and the “How I Manage It” Panels are expected to be lively, with senior practitioners from a diverse group of institutions concisely expressing evidence-based opinions on a variety of controversial issues. There will be ample opportunity for audience participation in every session.
