An introduction to the CCAS 2010 Annual Meeting
By Emad Mossad, MD
Program Co-Chair
On April 18th, 2010 the CCAS will convene our fourth annual winter meeting in affiliation with the SPA winter conference in San Antonio. The program is packed with a variety of exciting, up-to-date subjects and expert speakers.
The morning session will deal with neurologic protection and monitoring in pediatric cardiac surgery and is titled “Brain Storm! Recent advances in neurologic monitoring and protection”. Dr. Dean Andropoulos (Texas Children’s Hospital) will share the experience regarding the role of head MRI in the perioperative period. Following will be Dr. Kenneth Brady (John’s Hopkins) who will share his work on the use of near infrared spectroscopy to monitor cerebral auto regulation. Dr. Jeffrey Heinle (Texas Children’s Hospital) will review the application and use of ante grade cerebral perfusion.
The second morning session will be a review of glucose homeostasis in children undergoing cardiac surgical repairs by Dr. Ian James (Great Ormond Street). This will be followed by an interesting “cross-fire” on the best strategy to manage hyperglycemia in children between Dr. James DiNardo (Boston Children’s Hospital) and Dr. James Steven (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).
The last morning session will be two lectures on the pathophysiology and the perioperative anesthetic management of pulmonary hypertension. They will be delivered by two experts, Dr. Jeffrey Fineman from UCSF and Dr. Robert Friesen from Denver Children’s Hospital.
The evening of the fourth annual meeting will be packed by a series of “firsts”! We will have our first luncheon presentation, an introduction to the STS/CCAS Database project given by Dr. David Vener from Texas Children’s Hospital. David has been the champion of this project is best suited to present to the society members a summary of the process, value and methods of participation in the database project.
The evening sessions will start with the first “Study of a Lesion” section. Every year at the CCAS we will focus on a lesion, and this year we will review Complete Atrioventricular Canal defects. The lesion will be reviewed from a pathologist’s (Dr. Deborah Kearney-Texas Children’s Hospital), an echocardiographer (Dr. Isobel Russell-UCSF) and a surgeon (Dr. Jeffrey Heinle-Texas Children’s). There will be ample opportunity for the conference participants to review anatomical specimens at a station following the session and during breaks.
The next session will be a review on pacemakers and defibrillators given by Dr. Naomi Kertesz (Texas Children’s Hospital). The presentation will be followed by an interactive session moderated by Dr. Suanne Daves (Vanderbilt University) using the audience response system to evaluate the participants understanding of the presented information.
The last session of the day will be another “first”! Dr. Anthony Clapcich will be our moderator for a Cardiac Jeopardy session that promises to be exciting, interactive and stimulating especially at the end of such a packed program.
I hope I have wet your appetite to join us in San Antonio for the winter meeting of the CCAS.
