Welcome to Pediatric Anesthesiology 2005

It is my pleasure to welcome my anesthesia colleagues and their families to Pediatric Anesthesiology 2005, the tenth annual joint Winter Meeting of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The meeting, to be held February 24-27, 2005, will return again to the Fontainebleau Hilton Resort in Miami Beach, FL. The resort features a wide variety of water sports and recreational activities including tennis, windsurfing and jogging. There is a private dock with sight-seeing, fishing and sailing charters. Golf is minutes away. The half-acre, free-form pool has cascading waterfalls with a raw bar and ice cream parlor beneath the rock grotto. A salt-water pool and cabanas are located nearby.

In response to audience feedback, the SPA Board has scheduled four full days of sunshine for this year's meeting!

Featured at this year's meeting will be experts in pediatric anesthesia and guest speakers, addressing topics germane to general anesthesia, resuscitation, pain management, ethics, economics, and education.

Planned topics include:

  • A comprehensive review of cardiac resuscitation and support in children
  • Sessions on the approach to the morbidly obese patient and an update on the management of the child with DKA and Type II diabetes
  • The ever-popular Jeopardy game
  • A pro-con debate on the anesthetic management of endoscopic procedures
  • A panel presenting the top ten "don't miss" papers of the last year
  • AAP Advocacy Lecture and Awards
  • Oral and Poster Abstract presentations, featuring practical clinical techniques, clinical and basic research

In addition to plenary sessions and abstracts, other educational opportunities include:

  • Workshops covering airway and ventilation management, pain and regional anesthesia techniques, the incorporation of magic techniques in anesthesia practice, educational issues, ethical dilemmas, and business practices.
  • "All new" Refresher Courses addressing up-to-date topics of interest to clinicians.
  • Problem-Based Learning sessions providing participants with the chance to discuss challenging cases with experienced practitioners.
  • A one-day AHA-approved PALS course, which will be offered at a nearby human simulator center.

This meeting, known for its friendly, interactive, and comfortable atmosphere, will again incorporate the use of the popular, real-time computerized audience response polling system to survey audience composition, opinions, and practice patterns.

The program for this meeting reflects the collaborative efforts of the SPA Committee on Education, the Executive Committee of the AAP Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, and the enthusiastic and generous participation by scores of SPA members. Please join us to hear the voices of experience and to meet our specialty's leaders of tomorrow in a friendly, fun setting.
