Letters from readers:"No laughing matter" I recently received the Spring 2000 SPA Newsletter and was very dismayed to read the column entitled, "The Lighter Side". Contained in this item, in an apparent attempt to promote the establishment of rapport with our pediatric patients was a "joke" involving guns. As a father of two boys, aged six years and eighteen months, I am appalled that an organization which claims to promote the safety and welfare of children would publish such an irresponsible "joke". Gun violence is a major public health issue among the youth of the United States and I believe this item does a disservice to our society. While I clearly recognize the "joke" as an attempt at humor with no harm intended, the same may not necessarily be true of an impressionable or troubled child who may hear it.
