The Pediatric Anesthesiology meeting this year was a great
success. The weather was beautiful breaking the curse that has plagued
us for the last few years. Drs. David Polaner and Jennifer Krupp have
written excellent reviews of the sessions, which I hope will whet your
appetites for future meetings.
Members of the editorial staff for the newsletter suggested
mini-topic reviews in addition to our usual literature reviews. Two such
reviews are presented in this issue.
Dr. Sam Golden has summarized and commented on recent
papers examining the type of anesthesia used in former premature infants
undergoing inguinal hernia repair (printed newsletter-PNL) and Dr. Julianne
Bascik has done the same for Testing for Malignant Hyperthermia (web-based
newsletter - WBNL).
The Fellows Corner edited by Dr. Jeffrey Galinkin is in
the WBNL this month and contains the answers to some provoking questions
posed by fellows and potential fellows.
Finally we have our usual selection of excellent literature
reviews (thank you Drs. Mancuso, Algren, Khambatta and Gooden).
I also wanted to mention an excellent review article from
Paediatric Anaesthesia by P.D. Booker titled Pharmacologic Support for
Children with Myocardial Dysfunction (Vol. 12, Jan. 2002, pages 5-25).
This paper was not formally reviewed in this issue, but is definitely
worth a look. It concentrates on the physiology, pathology and age-related
changes in the normal pediatric cardiovascular system, as well as in the
critically ill pediatric patient.
As always, any ideas, contributions and contributors are
welcome please let me know if you're interested. In the next issue
we are hoping to present an update on the Journal Anesthesia &
Analgesia by Dr. Greeley as well as another Point/Counterpoint .
