Editor's Corner

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and making their plans to attend the Annual SPA and ASA meetings in Las Vegas this October. The SPA program looks excellent this year. The AAP Breakfast Panel is on anesthetizing the otherwise "healthy" child, who only has a little obesity, upper respiratory tract infection or ADHD symptoms (Monday, October 25).

The ASA, as always, has a wonderful selection of pediatric-related panels, problem-based learning discussions, abstract and poster presentations, clinical forum and assorted other topics.

This issue sees the return of "Letters from Africa" by Dr. Mark Newton who is a former colleague of mine. Mark started sharing his adventures in Africa a few years ago. I found them moving and absorbing and hoped that you would too. If any of you or your colleagues have any interesting and diverse experiences that you think the SPA membership might enjoy reading about, please let me know.

Dr. Helen Lauro has provided us with two new sections; one called PedsPassport that lists meetings of possible interest to anesthesiologists practicing pediatrics. The other is a Book Corner in which she discusses new texts of interest. As always please fell free to contribute!

It's time for elections again. A listing of positions and candidates within the SPA organization and a brief description of their qualifications are on the website in the Spring 2004 Newsletter. All the candidates are so good, I know it will be an extremely difficult decision, nevertheless I encourage everyone to read their resum‚s and vote at least five days prior to the SPA Annual Fall Meeting.

The literature reviews and topic review (Williams Syndrome by Dr. Kussman) are exceptional. We have so many wonderful assistant editors working hard to make this a useful and pertinent newsletter that it makes my job both easier and harder. As I was adding the finishing touches to my Editor's Corner, I received the latest issue of Anesthesiology (Aug). Two editorials and an excellent special article are devoted to anesthetic agents and the immature brain. Coincidentally, there is a very succinct review by Dr. Khambatta of an article in Pediatric Anaesthesia on the topic of anesthetic neurotoxicity in the developing brain in this newsletter. Many other literature reviews are on the web-based newsletter, please check them out at www.pedanesthesia.org.

As always, any ideas, suggestions, comments or desires to be a contributor are welcome.
