MHAUS Aims to Aid Anesthesia Professionals & Patients

The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States has spent over 20 years saving lives by providing MH educational services. It is dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality from MH and improving scientific understanding.

Basic services include the MH Hotline, which provides access 24/7 to anesthesiologists specializing in MH-crisis management, The Communicator, a quarterly newsletter with the most recent info, and www.mhaus.org, a valuable information resource.

New programs include the MH Procedure Manuals for the hospital, ambulatory or office-based surgery are tools to train staff. These manuals assign specific tasks with checklists and emphasize frequent mock drills. An instructional video, which enacts a response plan, is also included.

The CME-approved MH Slide Show Kit focuses on managing the MH risk in any surgical setting and assists in developing standard guidelines for treating MH.

MH Scientific Research

The North American MH Registry of MHAUS collects data in order to understand the characteristics of MH episodes and the distinguishing features of those at risk. Information is "deidentified" and not released without patient approval. The Registry activities conform to principles outlined by human studies committees at each participating institution.

Registry data are gathered from muscle biopsy center reports and AMRA reports on clinical events. It is hoped the data will serve as the basis for developing a molecular genetic test.
