President's Message

It hardly seems possible that almost two years have passed since I became the "tiaraed one", aka President of this Society! To say it has been my pleasure to serve doesn't begin to convey how much I've enjoyed myself. One major reason has been the great people I have worked with, both Society members and in the Society office in Richmond. My thanks are sent to you all for tolerating my wacky e-mails and endless requests, and to the membership for electing me.

I want to remind you all that the Past-President chairs the Nominating Committee, so let me know if you have ideas for good candidates for the next election in 2006. The Board tries not to have members run for or hold office in the SPA if they are in an elected position in the AAP Anesthesia Section, since both groups require a significant time commitment. I also want to thank Lynn Martin, the Chair of the Bylaws Committee for revising the Bylaws and incorporating a process to allow mail or electronic voting for this election (2004). The Board of Directors felt members should be able to vote, even if their personal schedules didn't allow attendance at the Annual Meeting.

As I reflect on the accomplishments of the past two years, I'm impressed with the contributions of so many of SPA's members. The Education Committee members develop interesting, exciting agendas, the Program Chairs finalize and invite the speakers, and those faculty who are SPA members or pediatric anesthesiologists contribute major efforts without monetary compensation from SPA. Our meetings would not happen without all this "free" effort. My thanks to you all is heartfelt.

Last October, we held our first joint International SPA/JSPA Meeting in San Francisco. This event was successful beyond my expectations, with a record attendance of 545, and is a testament to the dedicated planning of both organizations and the program chairs, Drs. Miyasaka and Rockoff. SPA has been contacted by our British counterparts about joining with them for a joint meeting in the next few years. Simultaneous translation won't be needed for this meeting, but I expect it will be as exciting as our first.

In response to numerous requests for input on pediatric anesthesia, the SPA Board of Directors has reviewed and approved a statement on pediatric anesthesia that recently was put onto our website. It incorporates elements from the statements published by the American Academy of Pediatrics Anesthesia and Pain Management Section on the perioperative environment and the ASA Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia pamphlet. SPA consulted in the development of both these publications. The goal is to improve pediatric anesthesia services and give anesthesiologists assistance in triaging care, to be resources in any institution and child/infant needs are well matched.

I can't finish this message without extending my gratitude to our corporate sponsors. Their unrestricted grants have made it possible to hold excellent meetings. Supporting the website and its new educational sections, as well as the meeting syllabi, the audience computer response system are all possible without draining SPA budgets because of corporate support. I need to especially cite Abbott, our Platinum sponsor. It takes vision to see that supporting pediatric endeavors is wise and they have that vision. I hope others may join them in helping us fulfill our mission - to advance the science, practice and education in pediatric anesthesia and to advocate for our pediatric patients.

Thanks for the honor of serving as SPA's first female President. I hope others will follow!

Anne M. Lynn, MD
President
