This is a
searchable index of US-based volunteer organizations that provide all
types of medical services in underdeveloped countries. Programs needing
help range from large well-known international agencies to small groups
of a few individuals who assist one or two locations annually.
The list includes US-based agencies whose goals are to provide
education, direct medical care, or public health supervision.
The list does not include organizations whose main goals are supplying
medical equipment, offering tour packages with secondary volunteer
activities, or recruiting non-medical volunteers (although many medical
programs require logistical and administrative support).
Accuracy. We have attempted to confirm information from the
organizations directly, but some listings may be incomplete or may have
changed. Questions regarding volunteer work should be directed to the
agency. Additional information about some charities can be obtained from
the Better Business Bureau's Philanthropic Advisory Service
(http://www.bbb.org/reports/charity.asp)
Most organizations require volunteers to be licensed in the
jurisdictions where they practice. Physician specialists generally
should be board-eligible or board-certified. Most agencies do not
provide malpractice insurance.
